Uno degli utilizzi probabilmente più sensati della VR che prescindono dal gaming è quello legato all’istruzione. Com’è possibile quindi che a oggi, dopo sette anni di realtà virtuale, nessuno abbia lanciato sul mercato un sofware di corsi online immersivi? GeniusX Inc cerca di coprire questo buco di mercato con Retreat, che viene lanciato proprio in questi giorni su Quest con un inedito sistema di pagamento legato ai singoli corsi. Vediamo insieme come funziona.
Di base Retreat è una piattaforma che propone una serie di video corsi in realtà virtuale, mettendoci faccia a faccia col nostro insegnante e assottigliando la distanza tra esperto e utente finale. Il metodo è molto semplice: ogni corso ha un suo hub, che è possibile esplorare da soli o in compagnia, e dentro il quale sono situati i vari capitoli della lezione che andremo a seguire. Arrivati nella zona dedicata al capitolo scelto ci comparirà magicamente di fronte l’insegnante, catturato ovviamente in chroma key e posizionato all’interno dello spazio 3D. Così, a sentimento potrebbe, sembrarvi qualcosa di poco piacevole alla vista, e invece Retreat riesce nell’arduo compito di farvi effettivamente sentire la presenza del vostro – o della vostra – insegnante, lavorando in modo più che dignitoso con l’integrazione tra immagini reali e tre dimensioni.
Balzerete quindi di capitolo in capitolo fino ad arrivare alla fine del corso, che potrete rincominciare in qualsiasi momento, e di cui – dall’acquisto – sarete effettivi proprietari.
Ma la vera domanda è: quali corsi sono disponibili su Retreat? E qual è il sistema di acquisto? Retreat, di base, è un software gratuito. Potete scaricarlo liberamente dallo store del Quest, creare il vostro avatar, e affrontare un paio di corsi già inclusi al suo interno, tra cui una sorta di allenamento che dovrebbe aumentare la vostra produttività, e un corso di yoga un po’ new-age che va a lavorare sulla vostra lucidità mentale.
Fondamentalmente, quindi, potete già rendervi conto se Retreat è un software che fa per voi o meno, anche grazie a un hub totalmente gratuito in cui confrontarvi con gli altri utenti al suo interno.
La differenza, però, la fanno ovviamente i corsi, e Retreat ha una varietà di proposte davvero peculiare. A differenza di molti portali tradizionali che si concentrano su temi e utenti specifici, il prodotto di GeniusX ne ha un po’ per tutti: corsi di auto-healing, corsi su come trovare il lavoro dei vostri sogni, corsi su come curare le proprie ferite e così via. Per ora, quello che troviamo sulla piattaforma si concentra comunque sul lavoro su sé stessi, che sia attraverso degli esercizi muscolari o respiratori, o semplicemente attraverso sezioni prettamente discorsive, magari integrate con qualche piccola interazione che va a rendere più immersiva l’esperienza. Tuttavia, Retreat viene costantemente aggiornato con corsi nuovi di zecca ogni mese, tanto che stanno arrivando lezioni su come scrivere un libro, sull’ipnoterapia, sul percorso imprenditoriale, e addirittura sulla cura dei propri animali domestici. Ora come ora la piattaforma è un po’ un calderone con di tutto e di più, e – nonostante la qualità dei prodotti sia già molto buona – sono sicuro che andrà a trovare una strada molto più specifica e organizzata nei prossimi mesi.
Quello che di buono fa Retreat, al di là di alcuni corsi molto azzeccati, è banalmente l’aver messo la propria bandierina in un contesto ancora scoperto dal mondo VR, che potrebbe beneficiare enormemente di un approccio immersivo rispetto al solito, e spesso noioso, video-corso online. Questo inedito modo di fruire la formazione ha però, ovviamente, un prezzo.
Il costo dei corsi varia ovviamente a seconda della durata. Abbiamo corsi da 120 monete, e corsi da 600 o 700 monete. Le monete in-game equivalgono ovviamente alla valuta proprietaria di Retreat, che è possibile acquistare direttamente da dentro al software con la carta collegata al proprio account Meta, e il cambio – devo dire – è decisamente onesto. 250 monete equivalgono infatti a 10€, con sconti sui tagli d’acquisto più grossi via via che si decide di comprare maggior valuta per acquistare le lezioni. Un costo assolutamente conveniente rispetto alle cifre dei portali più tradizionali, che probabilmente andranno ad alzarsi col tempo ma che, per ora, rimangono decisamente popolari.
L’unica pecca, legata però al nostro mercato, è che Retreat non presenta sottotitoli di nessun tipo integrati nelle lezioni. Ora, guardare fisicamente il volto di una persona che parla in inglese è decisamente più semplice che cercare di comprendere una voce fuori campo mentre siamo impegnati a fare altro dentro a un videogioco tradizionale, ma sicuramente chi non conosce la lingua verrà, momentaneamente, tagliato fuori.
Rimangono comunque alcuni spigoli da migliorare, come la possibilità di andare avanti velocemente, o un grado di interazione un po’ più evoluto, ma se volete anche soltanto dare una sbirciata al futuro dell’educational Retreat è una cosa che dovete decisamente provare.

Probably one of the most important uses of VR that go beyond gaming is related to education. So how is it possible that, after seven years of virtual reality, no one has launched an immersive online course software on the market? GeniusX Inc tries to cover this market need with Retreat, which is being launched right now on META Quest with an unprecedented payment system linked to individual courses. Let’s see together how it works.
Basically Retreat is a platform that offers a series of video courses in virtual reality, putting us face to face with our teacher and narrowing the distance between expert teacher and the user. The method is very simple: each course has its own hub, which can be explored alone or in company. Once we arrive at the area dedicated to the chosen chapter, the teacher will magically appear in front of us, obviously captured in chroma key and positioned within the 3D space. This might not seem very pleasing to the eye, but Retreat succeeds in the arduous task of making you actually feel the presence of yout teacher, perfectly integrating video footage and computer generated imagery.
You will jump from chapter to chapter until you reach the end of the course, which you can start over at any time, and of which – from the purchase – you will be the effective owner.
But the real question is, what courses are available on Retreat? And what is the purchasing system? Retreat is basically a free software. You can freely download it from the Quest store, create your avatar, and take on a couple of courses already included, including a sort of workout that should increase your productivity, and somewhat of a new-age yoga course that aims to improve your mental clarity.
You can already evaluate if Retreat is right for you or not based on this demo, and also on a completely free hub in which to compare yourself with other users.
The difference, however, is obviously made by the courses, and Retreat has a truly peculiar variety of offerings. Unlike many traditional portals that focus on specific topics and users, the GeniusX product has something for everyone: self-healing courses, courses on how to find your dream job, courses on how to heal your wounds and so on. For now, what we find on the platform still focuses on working on ourselves, whether through muscle or breathing exercises, or simply through purely discursive sections, often integrated with some small interactions that make the experience more immersive. However, Retreat is constantly being updated with brand new courses every month, so much so that upcoming lessons will focus on how to write a book, hypnotherapy, the entrepreneurial journey, and even caring for your pets. Right now the platform is a bit of a hodgepodge of different topics, and – although the quality of the products is already very good – I’m sure it will find a much more specific and organized path in the coming months.
Retreat’s best claim to success, beyond some very spot-on courses, is having placed its flag in a context still undiscovered by the VR world, which could greatly benefit from an immersive approach compared to the usual, and often boring, online video course. However, this new way of using training obviously comes at a price.
The cost of the courses varies according to the duration. We have courses for 120 coins, and courses for 600 for 700 coins. The in-game coins are equivalent to Retreat’s proprietary currency, which you can buy directly from within the software with the card linked to your Meta account, and the exchange rate – I must say – is quite honest. 250 coins are equivalent to €10, with discounts on larger purchase denominations as you decide to buy more currency to purchase more lessons. An absolutely convenient cost compared to the figures of more traditional portals, which will probably go up over time but, for now, remain very affordable.
The only flaw we could find thinking of a non-english speaking audience, is that Retreat does not have subtitles of any kind integrated into the lessons. Now, physically looking at the face of a person speaking in English is much simpler than trying to understand a voiceover while we are busy doing something else inside a traditional video game, but surely those who do not know the language will be temporarily cut off.
There are still some edges to improve, such as the ability to move forward quickly, or a slightly more evolved system of interaction, but if you want to take a peek into the future of education, Retreat is something you definitely have to try.
